This is the first year since 1951 that the British Open has been hosted at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Thursday will mark the start of this season’s final major and will see an entry pool of 156 players vying for a share in its $10,750,000 prize pool.
The annual tournament is one of four majors in the PGA that is held in the middle of July. Its history dates back to 1860 and is considered one of the most prestigious events on the calendar.
The Open is often seen as the purest of golf due to being held always at a course that borders coastal waters.
This year’s venue, the Royal Portrush is known for its sprawling views and sand dunes, it features 18 holes and plays host to the Irish Open. A course popular with many of the sports most famous players, its greens has hosted the likes of Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy.
As the Open is set to begin in the coming days, many punters are lining up to place bets on who will walk away with the coveted trophy. Defending champion, Francesco Molinari surprising sits outside the top three, but as history has shown, the challenges players face at the Open can see those off the radar jump into contention.

Rory McIlroy is hoping to add another major title to his record this year after winning the RBC Open and the Players Championship.
He is a favourite going into the British Open, however, is expected to face stiff competition from Brooks Koepka

Brooks Koepka has racked up four majors in the last two years and is a serious contender to win the British Open.
He is currently ranked No.1 in the world and to date, this season placed second at the U.S. Open. the 2019 Masters Tournament at Augusta and The Honda Classic. He also had first place finishes at the CJ Cup and the PGA Championship.
Dustin Johnson
Odds to win: 10-1
Dustin Johnson was ranked No.1 before Koepka dropping him into second. He has amassed 20 career wins, placed second at the PGA Championships this year and won the World Golf Championships in Mexico.
While not favoured to win, he will be a threat to contend with and could surprise naysayers if he makes the final round.
